My Favorite Poses During Your Houston Newborn Session | Luna Grace

Specializing in posed newborn baby portraits, Sarah Borchgrevink Photography is located in the Northwest Houston region. Here are Sarah's favorite poses that take place during your session.

Good afternoon, friends! Welcome! Today's blog post is going to showcase my favorite poses during our time together. If you're here on the blog, you may be pregnant and are looking for the best Houston newborn photographer. Well, you're in luck: I photograph the cutest babies in town and joyfully offer modern collections to fit your needs. I am digital based meaning you pay one flat rate for time, talent, session design, retouching, and a gorgeous gallery of images for you to download, share, enjoy and print on your own. The process is simple and straight forward to fit the lives of busy parents.

Allow me to introduce this sweet baby girl named Luna. I first met her gorgeous mama when she visited my studio for an in studio maternity session when she was around 32 weeks along. Once baby arrived, I sent Mom three dates to pick from that fit into the first 14 days of life. Luna was about a week and a half old when she visited for a newborn collection; Mom and Dad came from Porter, Texas. With the 99, however, they were able to get here in a little over half an hour, so that's one thing about my studio I adore: it's conveniently located so that parents are able to travel efficiently.

Beautiful Baby Luna has the most stunning features; at 8 pounds she's the perfect squish and I marveled at her full head of hair. I am the luckiest Houston Newborn Photographer! I spend my days wrapping sweet cherubs, hanging out with awesome parents, and loving every minute of it. This is truly my dream and I cannot wait to work with you! I have three little girls of my own named Lucy, Emma and Amelia; feel free to read more about my family here. Also, we're having our first boy this winter so I am stoked to share our pregnancy announcement with you. This in mind, as a mama, I cannot express how special the newborn time is and this is partly why I specialize in baby portraits; you will never regret these images!

Pose Number One: Froggy AKA Head in Hands

The froggy pose is a composite, which means we merge two or more photos together in processing through the help of editing software called Photoshop. The image you see here, right below, is the final blending of two photos. Underneath this picture, however, you can see one photo where I am holding Luna's head; the other photo I am holding her chin. She is never suspended in air. While babies are precious and this pose is super popular with parents, newborn safety is top priority and your baby's well being is of the utmost importance to me. I cannot stress how much I respect your baby and our time together.

Here are the images I chose to merge:

Pose Number Two: Bum Up

The "bum up" or "tooshie" pose is where we show off all these adorable rolls. It's also modest but still naked, since many parents like the photos of baby to be nude.  I also ensure we capture different angles here; I can add a wrap or swap out a headband, too, depending on the design of your session.

Pose Number Three: Taco AKA Womb

This pose is called taco or womb; here are the folded in half like a taco shell or more so head down how they are in the womb. This is the way they grow and they often adore being in this pose since it is familiar. Newborn sessions do take place in the first 14 days of life because this is when baby is still curly and moldable.

Pose Number Four: Timber

The timber pose is also called "soft taco", too, since we go straight into timber from froggy, which was previewed above. I adore the way baby's hands are gently placed on her face - it is truly precious!

Pose Number Five: Side Sleeper

Oh, side sleeper! This pose is truly timeless and really laid back. While it looks effortless, this pose often can take about 20 minutes to achieve since baby is naked here. If baby does not enjoy being naked, I'll wrap her top half, shown below, so she feels safe and secure. This is because wrapping mimics the womb and makes baby feel like something is hugging them.

Pose Number Six: All Tucked In

All "tucked in" is typically done early on in the session but is really a fun pose since there's nothing sweeter than a new baby peacefully slumbeirng.

The Woodlands & Spring TX Newborn Photography

Pose Number 7: Bucket

Of all the poses, bucket is probably my absolute favorite! The reasoning is simple: vintage inspired floor props and rustic floors truly make my heart sing. I do a bucket pose with each newborn who comes into my studio. Bucket can be done on belly or back, too. You can see both options below.

Pose Number 8: Potato

Like bucket, seen above, potato is done in each and every single session I do. I have a plethora of wraps and like the set up to be monochromatic; this means, for instance, if baby's wrap is mint, shown below, then I pull a matching mint bonnet, head band and flokati.

Pose Number 9: Asleep on Back AKA Straight jacket Wrapping

Finally, straight jacket is a great pose because it shows off the curly nature of baby but also is done early on in the session, typically right before "all tucked in". I wrap baby so she is snugly and sleeps beautifully for me. You're able to achieve a ton of variety through the use of unique, cozy wrapping and this adds tons of soul to your final gallery. The nice part of wrapping is while the naked bean bag posing is super cute, the truth is not every baby enjoys being naked. Your baby's well being is very important during the session so this gives a well rounded gallery without baby being upset.

Each collection comes with a flokati rug set up. Here is where we do the potato pose. Baby's love this and being wrapped keeps them so happy! Wrapping is a huge part of my newborn style and I urge to ensure this is a good fit for your aestetic preferences.

Houston Newborn Photographer | 5 Color Alternatives to Pink

Newborn Photographer, Sarah Borchgrevink, is located in Houston. Here are some color alternatives to pink for your babies session.

5 Color Schemes for a Newborn Session that Aren't Pink

Greetings, friends! Good morning to you! I hope everyone is doing well and is having a great Friday. :-) As always, I'm excited you're here. Today I am going to be writing about some color options that are great to consider. Now, before I begin this please know I have nothing against the color pink. It's very popular among parents. I choose to sometimes use pink, too. It's dainty and showcases all these girly. After all, certain color schemes will always be associated with each gender. For instance, when my husband, Kevin, and I chose to announce our latest pregnancy, we used blue so there was no confusion that we're expecting a little boy. However, as a portrait artist, I joyfully delight in providing all props and items for your session. It's important to me the session be both unique and special. Pink is a typical color found in girl collections, so this is may way of designing something a little outside of the box.

Here's what a recent had to say about her gorgeous, jewel tone session (that did not include any pink):

We were referred to Sarah by another photographer who was fully booked around our due date - and I’m so grateful! Sarah provided an amazing newborn photo experience from the start! She was quick to reply via email to all my questions, and had great advice on how to make sure our little one snoozed the whole time. She was so gentle and sweet handling our daughter, and she was so fun to talk with while we watched her work! I highly recommend you allow her to pick the color schemes for your baby. We let her pick all the colors and our favorite pictures ended up being with colors I would have never thought to pick! We are definitely hoping to come back for family pictures each year!

Part of your stress free portraiture experience includes leaving everything to me. You arrive at my studio, located in NW Houston, and everything is ready to go. Just bring baby and their diaper bag. Leave the rest to me. I encourage you to be surprised by all the neat colors I have on hand.

Let's get started! For this post, I'm excited to use a little lady who came to my studio at just a week old. She is 6 pounds and has the most amazing skin! She loved to be wrapped, but we also did some really cute bean bag sets up, too. :-)

GREEN

Green is a huge favorite of mine! This is because green looks gorgeous on little girls; you can pull kelly, sage, mints, and also tie in many darker hues to ensure baby's skin has a beautiful, soft glow.

BURGUNDY

As always, I adore maroon or burgundy colors. They remind me of a rich, vibrant wine tone and lend a timeless feel simply because they're elegant.

grey

Grey is a great color for a newborn baby girl session because it is neutral, soft and feminine. With each baby I have in studio, I typically will do a grey set up of some sort. Not only does this add a neutral aspect to your gallery, it is clean and looks nice on most skin tones. Grey can also be lighter, such as heather grey, but also may be darker, such as the charcoal scheme. Either way, I like them all. I hope you do, too!

NAVY BLUE

I like navy blue during girl newborn sessions because it's a little bit unexpected. It's also majestic and lends a graceful tone to your session. For parents who are worried that they session may look a tiny bit masculine, have no fear: I always use a tie back piece or headband, seen below, to suggest baby's gender. I do completely acknowledge it's fun for everyone to know baby is a girl, if she's a girl, of course, ha!

Purple or Plum

Purple or plum are absolutely ethereal colors for our time together. I do admit I generally prefer richer, more vibrant purples but I also have plenty of lavendar and softer, muted tones on hand. I keep your baby's skin tone in mind when pulling colors, so I will always ask for a little bit of information about baby once baby is actually born.

Following the session, this sweet baby girl's parents left the following review about my portraiture services. I hope this inspires you to let me fully style your session and enjoy what I've designed just for your new cherub.

The first time I am leaving a review for someone. Very very well deserved 5 stars. If you are looking for a new born session, look no further. The way she handles new born children is absolutely amazing. Its quite a sight to see her engrossed with your little one trying to ensure every single shot is picture perfect.

Pro Tip: Let her plan the entire session.Colors, props, pose everything. Just leave it to her and relax.

Thank you so much Sarah for giving us something we will treasure for a life time.
