Infant Photography in Houston Texas

At What age should newborn photos be taken?

Newborn Photography Cypress TX
  • The best time to photograph a new baby is in the first 14 days of life. There is, however, a "sweet spot" in which 5-9 days is best. Newborn babies have spent nine months growing in a tight space. The sooner they're photographed, the more likely they are to cooperate. For a sleepy, curly, and oh-so-squishy demeanor, try to book as soon as your little one is earthside. The studio offers flexible scheduling through an online booking calendar. The studio also provides different packages catering to newer and older newborn babies. If your baby spent time in the NICU, there are options for you, too.

What is the cost and pricing of Houston Newborn Photography?

Package pricing is transparent and straightforward. Our studio focus is selling full-resolution, retouched JPEG digital files and an unlimited print release you may use infinitely. Newborn packages begin at $550 and range to $1150. See a fully transparent pricing menu.

What is the best lighting for newborn photography?

What is the best lighting for newborn photography

The best lighting for newborn photography can be natural or studio lights.

  • Both options are beautiful and create stunning works of art. At Sarah Borchgrevink Photography, our studio is the premier and highly sought after option for discerning parents to consider because we offer both natural and studio lighting.

  • Our family photos are light, bright, and airy, occurring in our all-white lifestyle room. However, our posed newborn images arise in our newborn infant room, so you're sure to have soulful and dynamic images featuring shadows, contours, and perfect highlights. Have no fear: our studio lighting is never harsh, though it features ambient lighting. It is a natural and soft light that mimics sunlight from a nearby window. Constant white studio lights are also a practical option and won't cause the baby's skin to look red and warm.

What to bring to your baby’s first professional photoshoot

What do I need for a newborn photo shoot?

All you need to bring is your Baby and preferred method of feeding your new bundle of joy. We even provide snacks, diapers, and wipes and have a lovely playroom for your children to use while photographing the new sibling. • All props are classic, rustic, organic, and vintage. I have a huge selection for you to consider. There is also a matching wrap for every color of backdrop I have, too.

What does it mean to specialize in newborn photography?

Sarah and Kevin, owners of Sarah Borchgrevink Photography, specialize in posed infant photography within a studio setting.

What does it mean to specialize in newborn photography?
  • Specializing in posed newborn photography means you portrait artist has invested time, funds and has experience in one specific niche within the photography market. They're the "go-to" in the area for one genre. You set yourself apart by hyper-focusing on one genre, being one of the top photographers in your area, and continually looking to improve, thus offering an incredible experience and final product to your clients. You photograph what you love and do it well, all while being okay with giving up everything else. For example, I am exclusively photographing newborn babies these days.

  •  I am genuinely excited about this and the opportunity to build and grow my newborn brand. When selecting a newborn photographer, it's essential to choose someone who does specialize because you can be sure they take their job very seriously, are committed, and love the type of portraiture you've commissioned. It's perfectly okay to be a photographer who likes one area. In areas where it's a once in a lifetime session, such as newborn portraits or weddings, it is best to hire a professional who has a firm grasp on the content they're photographing.

vWHAT PRECAUTIONS DO YOU TAKE TO KEEP BABY SAFE?

Feel free to browse our Newborn Safety & Sanitation Policy for a list of daily safeguards implemented to protect our most petite, precious clients. Masks and gloves required for all sessions as well as CDC Approved Guidelines.

WHAT PRECAUTIONS DO YOU TAKE TO KEEP BABY SAFE?
  • Newborn safety, handling, and proper posing are absolute of the utmost importance during our time together! Your baby must be treated with love, care, and respect. While they're very sweet and limber, many precautions must be taken to keep them safe. Keeping baby content is also essential. A few ways I safeguard my sessions are the following:

  • The studio is kept at a toasty 77 degrees since the baby will be naked for some of our session. They cannot regulate their body temperature as well as an adult, so this keeps them warm.

  • The studio is sanitized, and every item is cleaned between babies. We mopping with Lysol, wiping out the trashcan, spraying door handles with disinfectant, washing all linens and textiles in baby-friendly laundry soap, such as Dreft, and wiping out all props with gentle soap, so they're clean for the next little one who comes to the studio. Our studio also has a daily professional cleaning service visiting complying with all COVID-19 guidelines.

  • Composites are always utilized for more advanced posing.

  • Bottoms of baskets and buckets are weighted down with 20 pounds of weight, so the baby never tips forward and is never in any risk of danger.

  • Keeping the studio space smoke free

  • Never leaving baby unattended or taking your eyes off of baby, even for a brief moment. Kevin assists in all newborn photography sessions.

  • We are mindful to read the baby's queues so as not to strain their muscles or joints.

  • We are making sure to keep the baby's autonomy in mind. If the baby dislikes a pose, we move on. It is not fair to baby to force them into a position or prop if they're uncomfortable.

Are you vaccinated and insured?

Houston Newborn Photographer
  • A newborn photographer should NEVER work with infants if they're not vaccinated or insured. As a professional business, you must have business and liability insurance, as well as legal documents showing you're running a legitimate business. Professional standards mean dealing with a true professional and not someone who is doing this as a side business, with zero to little training. Being vaccinated ensures baby is also in a safe environment. Since our little ones do not yet have a developed immune system, every precaution must be taken to keep them safe. Things like the flu are devastating to a newborn, similar to whooping cough.

HAVE YOU TAKEN WORKSHOPS OR MENTORED UNDER ANOTHER PROFESSIONAL?

Newborn Safety and Workshops for Photography
  • Newborn workshops typically focus on things such as soothing babies, posing, handling, lighting, retouching, session flow, and how to read baby's queues. As an experienced newborn photographer, safety is my top priority. I have taken workshops and mentored, too. Safety courses are how I learned about newborn photography. Security is one of the most critical elements to consider when you're hiring someone. Workshops ensure your baby is handled correctly with love and care; they're posed the correct way; they're never placed in a dangerous or compromising position.

Why should parents hire a professional for their infant photoshoots?

Newborn Photographers Houston Texas

There are two things; however, a parent should never compromise on: newborn safety and experience. Hiring a true professional is a decision you'll never regret making.

Newborn Photography Studio in Houston
  • In the world of photography, there are many things you should take note. Because babies can be hurt during a newborn session if an inexperienced photographer mishandles them, you should always use a reputable, experienced, and professionally trained photographer. It's a smart idea to research them. Ask for an in-person consultation. Visit their studio. Look at their reviews. Ask friends about the experience if you know someone who used their services. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Moreover, does this person seem comfortable working with babies, is open and approachable, and someone you can see providing care for your little one in the 2-3 hours they're in the studio?

  • It's tempting to use a family friend or someone who does not specialize in newborn photography because their prices are so low, but these people are not running legal businesses or are trained to work with babies. My newborn photography is how I feed my family, and I am a full-time business owner. I take great pride and care in my work.

  • If the pricing is low, it's because they're not paying taxes, and they're undercutting the market for those of us who follow the rules. They have not mentored, taken workshops, or know what they're doing. You get what you pay for, and your newborn session will probably be a disappointment if you use someone who is not qualified to work with the most precious clients. I say this not out of malicious intent, but because many parents have told me they did not do enough research with their first baby and assumed all newborn photography is the same. It's not, and your baby should be handled by someone who knows how to work with newborns, the same way your wedding should be photographed by someone who knows how to work with large events + couples.

Studio features:

Inside the studio you will find the perfect floor plan for amazing baby photography and a wonderful experience for new parents. The studio features the following:

  • A lobby and reception area so parents have a comfortable place to wait. There are also snacks, of course, and a coffee bar. Inside this lobby area you’ll also find a playroom for young children to hang out in whilst their sibling is being photographed.

  • The mothers lounge is designed for the comfort of new mothers. This is a nursing, feeding, or resting room so you may feed your baby, in comfort and peace, before and after your session. I do have four young children myself and recognize that feeding Baby is a huge part of your day. This mothers room will allow you to relax and to leave your session so Baby has a full tummy for the car ride home.

  • The prop room has anything you could ever want for accessories! Inside my prop room, which is labeled storage, you will find a huge array of props, perfectly organized. Here is where I will keep my hundreds of props such as buckets, bowls, baskets, wooden bowls, newborn antique beds, hats, bonnets, headbands, wraps, textiles, backdrops, and more!

  • The all white lifestyle room for family, child, or maternity sessions. This room is going to feature a big white bed, white couch, and have beautiful flooring, crown molding, and floor to ceiling light to make for the dreamiest of sessions. This can be used for little sitter sessions, baby milestones, and even family photos during your newborn session. This room will focus on capturing families naturally and with connections.

  • The posed newborn room featuring backdrops, three custom wood walls, and comfortable seating for you during your time in studio. This room is about 500 square feet, within itself, and will have the same look at my current studio. This means I’ll be keeping the three rustic wood walls my husband, Kevin, designed for me as well as all of the seamless paper backdrops. Everything will be set up in advance for your session for a seamless experience.

Amenities:

The building has monitored security, ample surface parking plus controlled access to garage covered parking, as well as a deli downstairs.

FAQ From Clients: What to Wear to Baby's Newborn Photo Session

In Studio Family Photos during Newborn Session: What Should Parents or Siblings Wear?

Booking your baby's first professional portraits is truly exciting! You've waited months to meet the baby and have dreamed of holding them in your arms! Now that you've selected your photographer and are gearing up for a great session, you may be a little unsure what to wear to your newborn session. Have no fear! As a professional newborn photographer plus mom (I mean, I DO have four kiddos!) I know how important these images are to you. You'll treasure them forever. You would like to look and feel your best. I'm here to guide you and provide an amazing, laid back experience for you new parents.

what to wear to baby's newborn photo shoot

Creams, Beige, and White | Top Colors that Photograph Best

what to wear to your newborn pictures

When your baby arrives, you'll receive a newborn prep guide from me. This is a detailed guide that tells you everything to expect, such as how to prepare your new arrival for the spotlight, but also covers when your family images will take place and how to dress for those. In my studio, I use a large wood wall for the photos. Because it's rustic, I prefer neutrals and lighter tones against the dark wood. My least favorite options are black and prints; my favorite is always beige, cream, taupe, ecru, white, etc. These tones are natural, classic, and will not detract for your little one during the session.

The V-Neck for Dad | Classic, Clean,Timeless

newborn session tips for parents

One of my favorite poses of Dad and Newborn Baby is when Dad is holding the baby against his chest; I love how Dad is the protector here. Baby is so small and new they literally fit in the palm of Dad's hand. During this portion, a v-neck that's fitted is a great outfit choice because it will forever be classic. There are no distracting prints or colors; Dad's arms are also showcased in comparison to the tiny newborn so it makes for a beautiful image! Any brand of these v-neck t-shirts is totally fine. Some parents buy them at Target or you can also find them at stores such as JCrew. Most men already have these in their closet, so it's one less thing to worry about on the morning of baby's photography session. For all of my family and parent posing, the baby is wrapped in a simple style so they're the perfect little bundle of joy you can hold. I always pull a wrap that looks nice against the cream or lighter tones I prefer you wear.

Simple Top or Maxi Dress for Mom

newborn photography what parents should wear

Moms are usually most nervous about the family photos because they worry about how they'll look. All photos, however, at my studio are hip up so baby is the star. I pose baby so you they act as a prop. I typically don't do a lot of images in which Mom is staring into the camera and smiling; it's more about connecting with your baby. A great idea for Mom to wear is a maxi dress or even the maternity gown from the baby shower, or, if you had pregnancy portraits with me, you probably purchased a dress for those images. You can definitely wear the same dress again. Not only will this makes thing easier for you, the dresses are usually jersey knit, which is a breathable textile. It's stretchy, soft, and you'll be able to move easily.

Sibling: Jean or khakis +A Light Cotton Top

sibling and newborn photography

The sibling portion always makes mom's heart soar! This is a very popular request for sessions and we set aside an additional 30 minutes for these setups. I like to pose the older sibling on their back while the eldest child holds the new baby. This is a safe way for them to interact without worrying if the baby will be dropped. A neutral colored flokati, such as cream or white, is a really pretty option here. Little ones look super precious in classic, natural attire such as dark wash blue jeans, perhaps even khaki pants, and then a simple top in a lighter color, such as beige, cream, white, or tan.

Thanks for stopping by to see my favorite colors in the studio, plus some tips on what to wear for our time together in the studio!

Let's recap this post:

  • Avoid bright colors, such as neon or even dark tones, such as black

  • Maxi dresses or light, airy tops are great for Mom

  • V-neck t-shirts are fabulous for Dad

  • Sibling looks adorable in simple top and dark wash jeans

  • Target, Kohls, J-Crew, or even Amazon are great resources for shopping. Your own closet is full of inspiration I bet, too!

If you are pregnant and are thinking about booking a professional newborn portrait artist in the Houston area, I would love to be considered for your photo needs! Let's chat! I look forward to hearing more about your family.
