Newborn Girl Photography | Ideas for a Chic & Precious Portrait Session

Sarah Borchgrevink, a baby photographer based in Houston TX, shares how she designs dainty and girly newborn sessions for her most petite, precious clients.

Sarah is amazing! She took photos of our daughter at 6 days old and was everything we could’ve hoped for and more! She was so gentle with her and handled her as if she were her own! Being able to select colors and themes for our session was so special and the pictures are just stunning. We will cherish these forever and are so happy we made the investment into Sarah Borchgrevink Photography!

Pink, Grey, Tan, Cream & Ivory for Timeless & Classic Baby Portraiture

When I think of a newborn girl session and the styling behind your timeless newborn portraiture, the first thing that comes to mind is dainty, classic, chic, and feminine. While I am a professional Houston newborn photographer, I also have three little girls of myself and I love all things sweet and simple! When designing baby's first portrait session for my clients, I like the session to be soft and pretty, particularly for little girls.

For instance, neutrals with one pop of color can be a truly stunning final gallery! Grey, to elaborate, is one of the most perfect neutral colors because it can be light or dark, warm or cool. This is perfect because baby's have a variety of different skin tones. Grey is a lovely accent color, too, because it's forever in style and timeless. In this case, I sent over my styling questionnaire to this sweet baby girl's parents, and they requested pink or peach be used in their session. They're totally in luck because my studio has every color you could possibly want, ha!

Let's get started on some fun inspiration for your own baby's session! I am super excited to preview this darling little one to you and hope you feel inspired!

Rustic Wooden Bowl with Grey Tones and Ivory Lace

This is a new rustic bowl you'll find in my huge prop collection. It's a great choice for a newborn girl session because it can be styled with either neutrals or color, depending on your preferences. In this particular case, however, Sadie's sweet mom requested grey to match their home and nursery. In order to create a unique set up for her baby girl session, I used several layers such as antique lace, chunky knit layer, hand dyed cheese cloth and an organic, custom made tie back to adorn baby's beautiful forehead. Vintage meets classic timeless results is my newborn motto: it means that through this type of styling and design, you create stunning newborn portraiture that will forever be beautiful. Why be trendy when you can be timeless? :-) These newborn images will be passed down to your child and their own children will view them - they'll be displayed at weddings and beyond. Investing in a photographer who provides gorgeous styling and all props is something you'll never regret.

Antique Farmhouse Metal Bucket with Cream & Tan Textured Layers

The distressed metal bucket or pail is a staple in my photography sessions. It fits most babies who are 10 pounds or less; it has a ton of character and also is just super cute, ha! The baby in the bucket image is one of the most requested photos by parents. To make this set up incredibly chic and precious, I pulled an ivory antique lace layer, and also a tan + taupe chunky knit layer so they contrast with the barnwood distressed floors. I paired Sadie's set up with a soft, muted blush pink headband, too, with the most girly hand sewn bead work, simply adorable!

Soft Ivory Backdrop with Matching Wrap & Dainty Handmade Tie Back

Ivory is a color I much prefer to white, mostly because there is a little more warmth to this color than white. It also looks better against the skin of newborns. White, you see, contrasts so much with newborn skin that it often highlights redness, jaundice, or purple and blue undertones. When styling for the newborn, their skin tone needs to be kept in mind. Sadie looks sensational here, wrapped artistically in a womb style. I adore when little one's hands and feet are curled perfectly, reflecting how they grow in the womb, and also when you can see their face perfectly. Remember: when posing a newborn you should always be able to see each characteristic on their face. It should never be hidden. You can achieve a chic and precious portrait session for a newborn baby girl by adding fun elements to the session such as the feminine tie back, seen below, that has a small hint of peach. :-)

Muted Blush Pink Cheesecloth Wrap & Sweet Bean Bag Posing

Naked bean bag posing is truly beautiful. We can see all baby's precious details while still keeping the neat and modest. Their chubby cheeks, little rolls, feet, and belly are truly adorable! To make Sadie's session very girly, without using too many props, I pulled a very light blush pink cheese cloth wrap for her bean bag portion. It's a nice layer that suggests gender but also is soft, sweet, simple, timeless and dainty - just like a beautiful newborn baby girl!

Warm Pink and Chunky Knit Layer for Potato Sack Flokati Pose

This flokati rug and wrap are both new to my studio. :-) It's a rose colored rug, perfect for a little baby girl! It is everything that showcases a little girl. I prefer the chunky knit layer, shown below, because it makes baby more round. When posing baby in the popular potato sack pose, you don't want any lumps to be seen.

Cream Vintage Egg Basket + Quilted Pillow & White Flokati Rug

This was my favorite set up mostly because how fresh, clean and simple it is. Sadie's hands are gently folded beneath her precious chin, a little white bonnet frames her face beautifully, and this pillow is just lovely underneath her sweet little head. I bought this flokati rug in December and now it's a favorite of mine for newborn girl photography! I love how fluffy it is. This vintage egg basket is also the perfect oval prop for a new baby and fits literally every newborn I've used with it! Score! Styling for chic newborn sessions that are super girly has a lot to do with the props; in this case, the lacy detail on the bonnet and the pink hue of the pillow suggest baby's gender.

Neutral Inspired Tootsie Wrap Set Up with Girly Beaded Headband

Again, I used the white flokati rug when styling this super girly newborn session since Mom and Dad like neutrals a lot. The neutral cream looks perfect against her skin, adding a soft creaminess and luminescence to little one. Sometimes parents ask me if the baby's skin is altered in Photoshop; I actually don't do a lot of retouching on little ones. I do clean them up and adjust skin tone as needed but most of the work is done via lighting. If your lighting set up is correct, then baby's skin will have contours, shadows and highlights. Think of it like this: as women, we contour our face via make up in order to sculpt our features. Professional lighting during a newborn session is key: the portrait session for a newborn will fall flat if your lighting is poor. This wrap is also a favorite of mine since baby's sweet little toes poke out in such a cute manner! Finally, to add the feminine and chic detail to this darling newborn girl's session, I added a beaded headband filled with different hues such as pink, blush, rose, quartz, cream and white so that it fits the theme of her dainty session while also showing baby is a girl. :-)

Precious Macro Details | Baby's Unique Characteristics

I love macro details! Parents ask me frequently what these are and the answer is simple: they're the unique details that make your baby who she is. It's her lips, button nose, dimpled chin, chubby cheeks, cupids bow, sweet little ears, tootsie toes, fingers, profile, hands, etc. I photograph these throughout all of my sessions at different points; some images are done during bean bag, some during floor props. Either way, these are details you will treasure forever! Right now baby is brand new but I cannot tell you how fast little one changes. Before you know it, baby will be a month old; you'll blink and then she'll be 6 months old.

All newborn sessions should contain macro images because they add much soul and depth to your final galleries.

Newborn Photography Poses through Unique & Cozy Wrapping | Allison

Newborn Photography for Houston Babies by Sarah Borchgrevink | Using Unique Wrapping to Create Posed Sessions

Allison at 2 Weeks Fresh and New | Wrapped Mini Collection

Greetings and howdy to you! My name is Sarah and I'm a Houston Newborn Photographer located in NW Harris County. My newborn portrait studio is the perfect place for your brand new baby because I have everything you need for gorgeous baby portraiture. Today's blog post is going to chat about how to pose newborn babies through cozy and unique wrapping styles.

Before we get started, however, I invite you to check out the following post as these may interest you:

Please allow me to introduce this darling baby girl! Her name is Allison and she visited when she was just over 2 weeks new. My newborn sessions do take place in the first 18 days life. While I adore all of my clients and look forward to meeting you, I was especially excited to work with Allison because her mother is a dear friend of mine. I first met her mom at a playgroup when our kiddos were a little younger. Over the years, I've really enjoyed getting to know her sweet mama and when I heard she was pregnant, I eagerly awaited the arrival. I may also check out all her Instagram baby posts because her daughter is simply stunning!

Allison weighed a little over 8 pounds when she visited and has copper hair, a button nose, and the most gorgeous skin tone. I cannot help but feel blessed I was able to capture this time for her parents. Her session features all things adorable wrapping and through these styles, we're able to achieve stunning newborn portraiture.

Posing Baby Through Tootsie Wrapping

The tootsie style of wrapping is a favorite of mine because it's creative, unique, and really allows us to see those adorable little toes you spend hours kissing, ha! As a mother myself, I understand how you simply cannot stop taking in all the gorgeous details about your brand new baby, such as their little toes or hands. This wrap is a great way to pose babies because it can be done via the bean bag or in any variety of floor props. For this particular session, I pulled a white washed bowl that has much character; it's full of chips and is well worn. This lends a vintage tone to the images, since I adore for the photos to have a classic quality to them. I use a precious cream bump blanket, white organic wrap, and stunning cream, gold, and light tan headband for baby's textured items. When placed against the barn-wood style of rustic floors, the set up is truly stunning because of contract. I love the way the light fills baby's face. The tootsie style of wrapping is a must have for any posed newborn session!

Here's a quick tip for having more variety in your sessions: pair the bowl with a flokati rug to achieve two set ups in one look. This makes the session a little smoother and quicker. After all, when you have 1 hour with parents, you want to make the most of each set up. You could even swap out the headband for a classic knit bonnet, too! The options are endless.

Wrapping Baby and Using Bean Bag

Another cozy and sweet way to wrap a newborn baby is by having their adorable little legs out and curled up, just like the womb! I usually do this in the beginning right after the parent posing portion of the session. You can use a variety of colors, textures, hats, headbands, etc. here.

This wrapping style is also helpful because sometimes baby is still awake. Every baby is different; some are more alert than others. By wrapping this little one, I was able to keep moving through our session and not waste any time. I also take this opportunity to capture detailed shots of baby's feet. The closer baby gets to 18 days, the more alert and awake she is. This means you have to find ways to keep baby content and happy. Cozy wrapping is a fantastic way to have an amazing newborn session because it allows you to move through the session without baby looking uncomfortable or having flailing limbs.

Potato Sack Wrap: My Favorite Way To Pose Newborns

Okay, so the potato sack wrap is one that I L-O-V-E. Literally. It's my favorite. You can achieve SO much with the wrap! You can tuck baby in, put them on bean bag, put baby into floor props, put baby into bucket, the ideas are infinite. If I could only do one style of wrapping when posing the newborns, this is the one. I cannot stress how important this wrap is, too, because it practices newborn safety. By keeping their feet wrapped up, it makes them a perfect little ball and you can place their hands under their cheeks, perhaps delicately upon their face, or even sweetly underneath their chin. Either way, it's the perfect wrap and I cannot tell you how much I love doing it.

Keep on scrolling to see all the fun ways to use this wrap from bean bag, to bucket, to floor props.

Feminine & Dainty Newborn Girl Photography | Houston Baby Photos

Houston Newborn Photographer, Sarah Borchgrevink, offers stunning newborn girl photography that is soft, dainty, and feminine.

Hi, friends! Welcome! I'm thrilled you're here to see one of the latest newborn baby girl's I've had in my Houston Newborn Photo Studio. When it comes to working with fresh new babies, their sessions take place in the first 18 days, as this is when babies are most curly and able to be molded into precious images. However, I also offer a plethora of gorgeous newborn wrapping, as this is a cornerstone to all of my baby portraiture.

When booking, this sweet baby girl's mom requested the session to be soft, neutral, and dainty. After all, what's more lovely than a brand new baby girl? With this inspiration in mind, I pulled many great props from my stash. For instance, for her first set up, I pulled an adorable organic wrap, petite tieback to adorn her little forehead, and a bowl to showcase how new and curly she is.

After her bowl set up, we moved to a gorgeous cream backdrop. This style of wrapping is one of my favorites because it keeps baby happy, safe, and they are able to be "molded" into sweet poses with their hands, especially. It's important baby looks serene and at peace.

For her flokati set up, I really focused on a vintage tie back, seen below, and a classic bonnet. The flokati rug is tan, so it's about as neutral as you can get! While I really enjoy using color, neutrals can be very soothing and will look wonderful with many styles of decor in your home. After all, the photos are meant to be displayed along your walls and albums should line your shelves. You'll never regret having a newborn session.

I like to use this cradle with both newborn girls and boys, however, the styling can differ depending on the gender. Nevertheless, this lovely sage bonnet and wrap are perfect for this sweet baby girl. You see, green is fantastic because it can be both bold or soft, depending on your preferences. I personally like this sage because it's a little bit muted, which adds to the vintage vibe I like to encompass. This cradle was a great find in my local antique shop! That's where I find most of my floor props - just hunting and looking for treasures, ha!

After the cradle, I pulled a rustic wooden bucket and a grey wrap that also has hints of lavendar. Like green, grey is one of those colors that can be masculine or feminine, depending on the hue. For instance, this one is soft and has more of a heather tone to it, so it's perfect for a little lady. At 9 days fresh and new, baby girls are truly just a dream!

the woodlands newborn photographer

After my floor props, we move to back to bean bag to do the adorable "tucked in" shot and the tootsie wrap. The tucked in shot is a fun way to bring in another color you've seen earlier in the session; this bonnet is perfect because it's the muted sage but also is not distracting. I like the hats to make baby's cheeks look plump and showcase their adorable newborn characteristics, such as full lips or their button nose. Photographing newborns is a joy and I really look forward to each and every session.

This blue wrap, seen further down, was really fun to use because it's nice to pull inspiration from colors not typically associated with a particular gender. For instance, while blue is often thought of as a "boy" color, I do think it looks lovely and soft on a little girl, especially when paired with a tieback. It almost reminds me of Cinderella and her blue gown at the ball, oh gosh! As a little girl, she was my favorite Disney princess, however, my own kiddos are partial to Jasmine now, lol!
