Set your little one’s portrait apart with stunning colors

When you book a professional posed newborn session with Sarah, you are going to receive a styling questionnaire. This questionnaire has you share colors you like and perhaps even a few you dislike. However, over the years I’ve worked in studio, I have found a common trend: sometimes parents are scared of color because they think it will be too brash or harsh again a their little bundle of joy’s skin.

Have no fear: through the use of studio lighting, top of the line camera gear, unique styling, and my vast array of luxury baby props color is my jam. This is how I create those ever so dreamy skin tones through the use of contrast.

You see, for my personal taste I like the baby to shine and to do so without distractions. Props are natural, timeless, and vintage-inspired so your gallery is forever in style. Think of it as a little black dress: always perfect, never dated.

While neutrals are a wonderful addition to posed sessions, I do urge you think about the following: if your home decor or nursery is neutral the pops of color can be breathtaking! For instance, if Baby is on a white backdrop, in a white picture frame, on a white wall they may blend in too much; however, with color, your baby will have fantastic skin tones, due to the contract, and the color will not make their skin look too dark.

In fact, I have noticed, when requesting colors, parents sometimes think about the colors they would use to decorate their homes versus colors that accent the decor in their home.

You’ll always find a few neutral setups in each baby photography session I photograph, however, please allow me to introduce awe-inspiring setups reflecting a gorgeous yet timeless use of color sure to create unique works to adorn your walls.

As you can see, the color against Baby’s skin gives them such a creamy, soft gorgeous hue in their perfect chubby cheeks! These colors are my absolute favorite to work with and I’m also so pleased when parents give me creative freedom to showcase all the neat ideas with a newly arrived bundle of joy.

The Magic of Froggy Position | Step by Step & How to Safely Pose

Greetings and welcome! Today's blog post topic is an overview on the popular froggy pose. This is the most requested pose by parents and one that I truly enjoy doing. There's something super sweet & special about baby's chubby cheeks being showcased and seeing their darling little tootsies! However, this pose is very advanced and requires special training.

Moreover, parents typically ask, "What do you mean by training?" Newborn safety and training, for instance, is mentoring and taking hands on workshops in which you learn how to safely handle and pose a newborn baby. While newborn photography should look effortless, as if baby posed themselves even, it is anything but. It requires much safety, skill and time.

As one of the best newborn photographers in Houston, I do pride myself on always being respectful of my most petite clients. Part of this is creating beautiful fine art images of brand new cherubs through the use of safety techniques. 

A few things to note:

• Not every baby likes froggy pose. If baby resists, we move on.
• This is best achived with a new baby who is 5-8 days new 
• If baby is not flexible enough, we do not force this pose
• This pose is ALWAYS a composite. 
• Do not EVER try to do this on your own. It is not worth the risk of hurting a new baby.

What is a composite?

Froggy pose is always done as a composite. A composite image is when two or more images are merged together in post processing software, such as Photoshop. It's sort of like building an image: you take multiple photos in which baby is fully supported and then through the magic of editing, a beautiful image is created in which we're able to truly showcase the stunning aspects of a new baby. 

Hands on Baby at all times

Once baby is in a very deep sleep, I place baby on my bean bag. I ensure baby is completely supported through the use of posing beans, which are the must have safety tool for all photographers.

Tips to ensure baby is sleepy:

• White noise machine playing (mimicking the sound of the womb)
• Warm environment - typically around 77 - 80 degrees 
• Lots of patience and soothing
• Pacifier is a huge help

Step One: Hands supporting baby's chin from beneath

The baby you see here is Sebastian. He was very laid back and easy to work with; because he was also very new and flexible, we were able to quickly pose him into the froggy pose perfectly. As you can see, he is sleeping peacefully and my hand is holding him in place. At no point did I ever remove my hand from the baby. I took two images here. He is supported on my bean bag and then has posing beans beneath and behind him to ensure he does not slide forwards or backwards.

Step Two: Hands Supporting Head From Above

After baby is in a very deep sleep, I place my hand on his head from above. I am holding his weight and he is supported beneath through the posing beans I linked in an earlier paragraph (above).

Switch up the angles for more interest

When working with a newborn baby, it's fun to do a profile angle of baby during froggy. If they're very laid back, I am often able to  do more than one angle, such as straight on or side view. I like side view, however, because it shows off baby's face better and is more interesting, in my opinion. However, I do like front on, too, and this is the preference of most parents so I include both if possible.

Once you arrive, we immediately feed baby and go into the session. I will guide you and give you plenty of direction. I have a very hands on approach to newborn photography and am comfortable leading the session so you know exactly what to expect.

Each collection comes with a flokati rug set up. Here is where we do the potato pose. Baby's love this and being wrapped keeps them so happy! Wrapping is a huge part of my newborn style and I urge to ensure this is a good fit for your aestetic preferences.

First Floor Prop: White Classic Bowl

My studio is filled to the brim with classic floor props. I generally find these at antique stores. They lend a vintage tone to your session and ensure the final result is timeless.

MACRO IMAGES | UP CLOSE + SUPER SWEET DETAILS

The macro portion is always lovely because these up close details are the characteristics that are unique to your baby. These can be lips, nose, ears, toes, hands, etc.

BEAN BAG POSING 

The bean bag portion are the naked, squishy poses you may be familiar with. Each baby likes to be posed differently, however, the following images are the main poses I do with each baby. 

Booking Your Session

A $100 non-refundable retainer and contract secure your appointment on the calendar. These are due immediately. The retainer is applied to any collection of your choice.  Payment plans are available upon request. Your final balance is due the day before your session.

How You Receive Your Digital Images

Following your portrait session, I retouch your images. These are completed in 10-12 business days. You receive a password protected and private gallery that is available to you for immediate download and sharing of your images. Your final gallery will give instructions on how to select the prints that come in your collection. If you are interested in additional products, we may set up an ordering appointment.

Additional Helpful Newborn Session Details:

• I provide all props, accessories, and items for your session. You just bring the baby.
• Studio is located in NW Houston near Barker Cypress & 290 -20 minutes outside the 610 loop
• Sessions take place in the first 14 days of life; my preference is 4-10 days, however.
• Sessions take place 7 days per week, starting at 10 AM
• Collections include high resolution digital files for you to download, share and enjoy
• I am fully vaccinated and insured. I also am formally trained in the custom art of newborn photography and have taken several workshops on newborn handling and safety in additional to professional training for posing, lighting, styling and post processing of your images.

The  session process is simple: you arrive, I photograph the session, retouch the images, and then 10 business days later you receive a private gallery in which you may immediately download and share your gorgeous images! They’re yours to print, share online, etc. Your loved ones may also download the images, too. This is a great option for grandparents who may not live in Houston. I do offer professional prints/products if you’re interested in them, but there is no minimum order. I provide a stress free, easy going experience for new parents.
