What Does the Fox Say? Woodlands Creatures Nursery is the Cutest Theme!

Woodlands & Animal Decor Makes for Unique and Whimsical Baby Portraits by Sarah Borchgrevink

Good morning, friends! Today’s blog post is super cute because what is more darling, precious, and basically amazing than a newborn baby who is styled to reflect adorable Woodlands creatures? First things first: this is a really cute theme that works well for both boys or girls. I have found that many parents enjoy selecting this theme, even if they’re not finding out Baby’s gender, because it’s natural yet truly fun!

Cameron’s Nursery Inspiration

Precious baby girl, Cameron, was an absolute dream to photograph in my Houston Newborn Baby Portrait Studio! She visited at just over a week old and her parents were super fun to hang out with for the morning. Not only did she rock her session, we had a lot of fun together because her session was all about adventure! You see, even though Cameron is a girl, it’s totally okay to stray from the typical girl colors, such as pink and white. Instead, there are also many options for parents who are looking for unique images of their brand new infant. For example, Cameron’s Daddy, Simon, relayed he would like to evoke a sense of wonder and the greater outdoors in his little one. This adorable nursery theme truly is the cutest!

Her parents sent me the following images from their home:

Cooper & Wildlife Animal Friends

Cooper’s sweet Mama, Rachel, booked a full newborn collection with me and was kind enough to share an image of his bedroom which is inspired by all things neutral, trendy, and Woodlands creatures. For instance, colors in his bedroom are taupe, tan, grey, onyx, charcoal, and all things rustic and timeless, just like my own newborn brand, ha!

Creative Approach and Influence

woodlands theme newborn baby session

When designing a posed newborn session, each set up should reflect things that make you happy! I like to see images of your baby’s nursery because it relays many important facts to me such as the style you like, colors, the textures that pique your interest, and also tells me if you’re more classic or trendy, both of which make for a wonderful session! This in mind, you’re sent a newborn styling questionnaire, but the rest is up to me. All props and styling is provided for you; just bring Baby and leave the rest to me. For example, an adorable bear bonnet + the super cute matching teddy bear makes my heart so happy. Plus, you may be interested in knowing that these classic teddy bear bonnets are the top requested prop by parents!

For example, part of creating the Best Houston Newborn Photography, a few must have items are: texture, interest, amazing light, gorgeous vintage-inspired props, and of course stunning styling. To elaborate, these items come together to create a wonderful portrait of the light in your life: your baby! When Jessica, who is the fantastic Mama to Quinn, featured above, shared her vision with me, she relayed she really likes neutrals. This in mind, I chose an adorable wooden stump bucket that I’ve been saving for the perfect baby. We used a chocolate brown knit hat, and a taupe layer to add a dreamy accent to baby’s bucket image.

Cameron and Cooper are featured below. Check out the super cute fox hat and even the bear bonnets.

Babies in floor props are always a favorite part of my time in studio. I love when their little hands are folded perfectly. These are examples of how to incorporate nursery themes, such as Woodlands creatures and animals, into your newborn session while also remaining timeless and true to my newborn branding.

Home Girl Hailey Means Business | Best Cake Smash Smack Down

Hailey is Baby Plan Client of the month! Check out her late September natural light, outdoor cake smash and splash!

classic one year old portraits

Let’s keep things sweet over here at the blog! Each month there is a featured session on my blog; sometimes it’s a family, other times a belly! You’ll also find precious newborns and their parents. However, let’s be honest here: a cake smash smack down is something we can all appreciate!

At my portrait studio, for instance, there is a popular baby plan membership that includes a posed in studio newborn session, 7 month sitter session, and finally a cake smash and splash session. My one year old birthday sessions reflect all things timeless & classic, though also are super fun as we allow baby to be who they are!

This also adds an affordable savings to new parents who are considering first year of life.

Where did we photograph the photos?

where to take cake smash photos in houston

For Hailey’s one year portraits, her parents requested a natural light & outdoor setting. At SBP, on location portraiture sessions take place 7 days per week specifically at the hours of sunrise or sunset; in Houston, this does vary depending on the time of the year, however, for the month of September, specifically in the later half, we were beginning at 7:10 AM. A stunning and curated location list is given to clients so they may select their favorite look. We chose location 6 for it’s swoon worthy, soft light and gorgeous atmosphere.

What’s included in a cake smash & splash?

A cake smash & splash prep guide is provided for each and every client. These sessions are typically around 45 minutes long and include (3) set ups. (1) set up showcases baby in an adorable, classic outfit, provided by me (see an updated client closet I have on hand for you!), followed by the actual smash, and then a precious bubble bath in a farmhouse vintage tub.

During Hailey’s sessions, I provided the outfits for her so that the styling reflects my timeless, classic, and dreamy brand. I provide all accessories and props, with the exception of the cake, for allergy purposes, but your prep guide will tell you where to purchase the cake. :-)

Simply bring your little one, diaper bag, and cake to me as I design a lovely session to honor and preserve this precious baby milestone in your life!

I am always updating and adding new items to my client closet, too!

Personality & Perseverance

Once Mom and Dad placed the cake in front of Hailey, she knew exactly what to do! Her parents and I had a great time watching her smash the cake. She took her job super seriously and did not hold back!

The Splash | Vintage Farmhouse Bowl for Timeless Vibe

1 year old baby girl photo shoot ideas

For each of my Houston Baby Milestone Photography sessions, I provide lovely floor props that reflect all things vintage, classic, rustic, timeless and evoke the dreamiest baby photography! The farmhouse bowl is one of my favorite pieces because it reflects the quintessential baby portraits: precious little one splashing in the tub! I provide warm water and nice smelling bubble bath, too, (though you’re free to bring your own if you’d like!) so baby is nice and clean once we’re done with our session. This is a great idea for one year old baby portraits because it’s fun, laid back, something familiar to little one so it eases uncertainty for them, while also reflecting the adorable chubbiness of a growing baby. Happy Birthday, Hailey!

Quick Tips for One Year old Photoshoots:

1 year old picture poses

When booking your baby’s one year old or birthday images, it’s always best to select a time in which little one will be happy and well rested. I offer both studio and outdoor sessions for this reason. If your little one is not happy earlier in the morning, such as sunrise, it’s best to schedule a studio appointment so we may showcase all that is giggly, sweet, and precious about the light of your life, your child!

Right after nap is a great time to bring little one in! I also recommend having a snack, too, on hand and even a favorite toy or stuffed animal that will delight your sweet baby girl.

October is Infant Safe Sleep Awareness Month | Community Resources + Support

Safe Sleep Resources for New Parents To Consider

Good morning, friends! Today’s blog post is all about safe sleeping awareness and sharing local Houston resources for parents to check out! October is dedicated to newborn safety and creating a healthy sleep environment for little ones. If you’re currently expecting your own bundle of joy or perhaps are interested on safe sleeping habits, this is a great post for you!

While I am a professional newborn photographer and do practice safety in all that I do, I also would like to share great resources and infant care classes that are available in the Greater Houston Area. These promote infant care classes and parenting support. As a mom to four little ones, I cannot tell you how valuable these are! Bringing home a new baby is a whirlwind of emotions, but being prepared through hands on education is a great way to combat the unknown.

What is safe sleep month?

October is safe sleep month in which sleep education for pregnant women and their families help reduce the incidence of Sudden Unexpected Death Syndrome (SUID). Moreover, as mentioned, I do have four young children so I realize there is much to do before bringing a baby home!

Helping Babies Sleep Safely

As parents, we can reduce the risk of injuries or accidents by taking precautions and creating a safe environment for our infants. According to Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies (which is a coalition based in Hawaii) here are steps you may take always keep baby safe as they slumber. This program provides education on the risk factors, how to create a safe sleep environment, and tracks the baby’s health throughout its first year of life.

  • Always place infants to sleep on their backs.

  • Place infants to sleep in a baby bed with a firm mattress.

  • There should be nothing in but the baby—no blankets, no pillows, no bumper pads, no positioning devices, and no toys.

  • Keep your baby’s crib in the parents’ room until your baby is at least 6 month’s old.

  • Don’t place your baby to sleep in an adult bed, couch, or futon.

  • Don’t overheat the infant while she sleeps. Just use enough clothes to keep the baby warm without a blanket. Keep the room at a temperature that is comfortable for you.
