Ideas for Meals and Snacks to Bring to a New Mom that Aren't Lasagna

Sarah Borchgrevink shares comfort food choices to consider when bringing a meal to a new mom. Tips from a Mom of 4 Kiddos!

Having a new baby is one of the most wonderful milestones in your life! When your precious angel is placed on your chest, it’s almost as if time stops and the missing piece to the puzzle in life is complete. Your hopes, dreams, everything beautiful in this world is before you. Once you return home with your new bundle of joy, you’re going to be healing and spending much time tending to baby. The best thing you can do in the first few weeks of life is put your feet up and focus on bonding with your newest addition. I remember, for instance, when having my son, all I could do was gaze at him in complete awe that he is mine. This amazing little human being - who would he grow to be?

This in mind, when you’re healing, but not getting much sleep, sometimes being on your feet and cooking meals can take a backseat to the Baby’s needs. After all, as Moms we are designed to go into parenting overdrive. We want all of our little one’s needs to be met and we forget about ourselves, such as eating meals.

Moreover, despite the fact that time seems to stop once Baby is born, the world keeps spinning around us. There are things to be done, such as cooking, housecleaning, and keeping up with everyday life.

If you know someone who has recently had a precious baby or is about to have a little one, check in on them and see if they’re interested in a meal! For example, in the playgroup I’m in, the organizers are super kind and set up meals trains for families growing by two feet.

Why Not Lasagna?

meals for a new mom

You’re probably scratching your head and thinking, “but lasagna is amazing!” I agree! Cheese, richness, carbs, noodles, protein, gooey-gooey deliciousness, ha! However, almost everyone thinks of lasagna when they want to bring a meal to someone. And while scrumptious, a new Mom is not Garfield the Cat and may want a little more variety in her life, ha! To combat too much of the same dish, a veteran Mom tip I have for you is to team up with 3-4 friends and perhaps plan menus for the family you’re serving. Consider the ages of their children, if they have other little ones, and perhaps Dads work schedule, as he will be back at the office sooner rather than later.

Quick tips from a veteran Mom

I’ve had four babies myself and while I always thought meal trains were a nice gesture it was not until I had my own little ones did I realize what an act of love it to prepare a meal for someone with a new baby. Here are a few tips before we get to the ideas for meals!

  1. Make it Easy. The new mom (and Dad!) should not have to do a thing. Sure, they can pop something in the oven, but avoid any type of chopping, prepping, etc. Believe me: mom may be pumping and the last thing she wants to do is finely mince an onion while baby wearing, at least when her little darling is 3 hours old.

  2. Don’t bug Mom about what she likes. I promise you, if she has a food allergy she will tell you but just take it upon yourself to select something that not’s Cheetos and Diet Coke, ha, but that is thoughtful and wholesome. There are typically classics everyone likes (hence why you can easily have too many lasagnas, ha!) If you are curious, though, about dairy of spicy foods for a new Mom, check it with her spouse or partner, but leave Mom in peace.

  3. Drop the food off and leave. Do not linger, do not hover. Mom and Dad will let you know when they’re taking visitors, I promise! It’s nothing personal, but they are bonding with little one. For example, my son, Jack, was born at Christmas right at the height of flu season, which was particularly bad in Houston this past 2017/2018 season. My son was not yet vaccinated.

For All the Things My Hands Have Held the Best By Far Is You

See the cutest newborn, family, parent, and sibling images from last week!

Newborn Family Photography in Houston Texas

Of all the photos you’ll ever have taken of your new arrival, the family, parent, or sibling images will resonate timelessly throughout baby’s life. These images reflect the love and bond between a brand new baby and their parents. This is when little one has just began to be part of this world and they truly fit in the palm of your hand. Never will they be this small; smell this way, or touch your heart as sweetly. As one of Houston’s Top Newborn Photographers, I delight in offering packages that reflecting classic and stunning studio portraiture work. Family, parent, and sibling setups are wonderful to document. Here’s who visited last week!

Baby Boy Quinn

Congratulations to Jessica and Matt! Quinn is such a handsome little fella; weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces he is truly a bundle of joy. He is their first baby and was an absolute joy to photograph as his session reflected a Woodlands Creatures Theme with furry, sweet animal friends. Mom and Dad booked the popular ‘petite’ newborn package, which is ideal for first time parents. This newborn family pose is one of my favorites as hands are on baby and show how sweet, little, and precious they are. Congrats to the L Family! All my joy to you on this new adventure with your beautiful son!

Sweet Sisters | Amal & Mia

sibling sister newborn posing

The wrapped newborn mini with family add on (an additional $150) is the perfect session for babies who have missed the traditional 14 days or less for scheduling. Amal visited my Houston Baby Portrait Studio at a little over 3 weeks old. Mia, three years old, is the best big sister! Sibling and newborn photography can sometimes be a little spirited, but Mia was a rock star and one of the best big sisters I’ve ever had in studio! For their sibling portion we did two different set ups: one of Amal holding Mia on a white, fluffy flokati rug and another where Mia was in the bucket and she gently kisses and hugs sister.

As you can see, Amal is snugly and posed perfectly in one of the many buckets you’ll find in my studio! Her head full of gorgeous dark hair is adorned with a precious headband. Sibling images will make their mother’s heart soar! What a sweet pair of little girls. I am honored to have worked with them.

The Garcia Family

The Garcia family visited with their brand new little girl, who weighs 9 pounds, such a squish! They chose the full newborn session, which is an amazing option for parents seeking a large variety of images for our time together. Your baby is only small for a few short weeks so sometimes parents will book the largest package to ensure they have as many photos as they could possibly need.

Working with new parents and their earth side babies is an absolute dream! When posing Mom and newborn baby, or dad and their little one, we we use two different backdrops: one is the custom wood wall that is a complete show stopper! The other is the classic white background in my studio featuring gorgeous light that is effortlessly beautiful. Both make for an incredible gallery!

The Wolf Family | Returning Clients

About two years ago I had the honor of visiting their beautiful home for an in home lifestyle newborn session; at the time I was still offering family sessions in my clients’ homes. However, I have since moved to where I specialize in posed newborn photography within a studio setting; this in mind, the Wolf family came to me this time for their images of their second little one, Abby! Big Brother Benjamin is even more precious than the last time I saw him! He was all smiles and full of pride as we photographed the entire family with little sister. Many thanks to the Wolf’s for choosing me a second time. I loved working with you again!

Father and Newborn Son | Favorite Angle

Colt is the a miracle baby (see more of their post here with Love Story of Ashley and Justin). During our full newborn session, Baby Boy is posed in many different setups such as Dad and Baby. I love this angle because it shows all of Baby’s beautiful features as well as the chest of Dad protecting his little one. Colt is also a baby plan client so I worked with Ashley & Justin on their maternity session, newborn session, too, and will also be seeing them for their 6 month sitter and 12 month cake smash and splash session. Thank you to the R family for choosing me!

Cassondra's the Second Winner of Pay It Forward Plus See Why She's Awesome!

Following up on the March 2018 ‘Pay It Forward’ Session Giveaway | Meet the Second Winner!

Hey, gang! Wow, I am so happy you’re visiting this blog post today! If you’re a regular follower, you may know that in March 2018 I did a session giveaway in which the premise was simple: share an act of kindness in hopes of inspiring other people to do nice things just because. In turn, when someone does something kind for you, you ‘pay it forward’ by doing something nice for other people, too. This creates a movement, even if small, of actions that better the world.

One morning, I woke up feeling very grateful, my heart wanting to give. I firmly believe each and every person has their own gifts and talents they can use to benefit others. I’m a professional newborn photographer in Houston; I am able to create lasting images that stand the test of time. These photos will be passed down from generation to generation; treasured heirlooms that are sure to preserve a precious new life. This in mind, I created a Facebook post with the following information:

acts of kindness

This morning I awoke with a happy, joyful heart feeling inspired to pay it forward. There are few feelings as awesome as doing something kind for someone without expectations in return.

This in mind, I am giving away a completely free mini session to Sarah Borchgrevink Photography, LLC. I'm based in Houston, TX and specialize in posed newborn photography, but also photograph family, maternity, and studio milestone baby sessions, too, such as 6 and 12 months. :-)

If you'd like to enter for a free mini session it's simple: comment below with one (or even more!) ways you have paid it forward. You can also share a selfless act you've done. It's a nice way to put a little bit of goodness into this world and to inspire others, too.

I'll pick my favorite comment and I will follow up with a blog post featuring your session as well as showcasing other ways to pay it forward. This post is open until 3/28 at 3:30 PM. :-)

No strings are attached, just share an experience and I will look forward to reading them.

Mini Sessions at Sarah Borchgrevink Photography include the following: (8) full resolution, retouched digital files as well as a professional grade 4x6" print of each image. This session may be applied to newborn, baby milestone, family, or maternity.

I've never done this before so hopefully, it's not a complete failure, yikes!

Wishing you all a fantastic Tuesday with your loved ones! I'm out of the office for the rest of the day so I may spend time with my little ones, but I'll be back bright and early tomorrow morning.

27 people entered the giveaway! I chose my favorites based on reactions from followers, too, but also considered the act as well. For instance, Jamie, the first winner, donated a year of breast milk! You can read more about Jamie’s Act of Kindness, too!

Meet Cassondra

Please allow me to introduce you to one of the nicest parents I’ve ever had in my studio! I am awe of her! Not only is she an amazing person, inspiration to me, and also a fantastic Mom, when she visited my studio, I felt like she was a buddy and really connected with her. She is full of joy, positive energy, and is totally awesome! Wow!

pay it forward movement

In case the photo above does not load, here is her act of kindness.

“Before becoming a mother, I was a special education teacher. I taught the most beautiful population of students, kiddos with a range of severe and profound disabilities.
During my time at a specific middle school, my student were majority low income. It didn’t take me long to realize their needs were far and beyond academic. Luckily for me, my husband had been volunteering in special Olympics for years, one of the reasons I fell in love with him, and supported (still does) my burning desire to do good in this special community. So, I set out.
We purchased every single student hair brush, tooth brush, deodorant, floss, etc. I began arriving at school early and opening my doors to my students so before school started, I could wash their hair, braid it, teach them to brush and be ready for their day.
One of our sweet girls was in desperate need of a bra and age appropriate clothing that fit her; so we slowly but surely bought her a wardrobe that matched her royal personality and her age.
Another of our strapping young men desired to be a part of sports. With the encouragement from our class, conversations with our sports coaches, and his dedication, he made not only the track team but basket ball team.
The assistants in my classroom, who became my family, jumped right in along side me. We worked together to drive him to and from practices, purchase his shoes, pack him snacks for practice days and game days. We stepped in when his parents weren’t able.

I wasn’t alone in this endeavor. Myself, my husband, and two of the aids in my classroom jumped in. In fact, my male assistant learned to braid in order to help. My aids, who weren’t paid enough to begin with, gave additional time they absolutely didn’t have to give.

That group of kids will keep a special place in my heart no matter where I go or what I do. They taught me more than I can express. They deserved every single opportunity to be age appropriate and included. Throughout the year, no matter how much academic success we saw, the most joy was their social success. Learning to care for their own bodies, learning to be confident, learning to give to one another, teaching us what it means to be a good human. I keep in touch with most of these kids and their parents to this day, most of them are about to graduate high school.

This experience, giving from the deepest parts of my soul, extending my school day, attending their events and watching them bloom, has been one of the absolute highlights of my life “
