9 Questions to Ask When Hiring a Professional Newborn Photographer

Top 9 questions parents should ask when commissioning a newborn portrait artist for little one's first professional session.

Bringing home a new baby is one of the most momentous moments in your life! You're probably feeling a variety of emotions from elation, tender love, and perhaps excitement as you welcome baby into your life. As a Houston Newborn Photographer and Professional Mommy (ha!) to Emma (7), Lucy (3), Amelia (2) and Jack (2 weeks new) I can attest that of all the childhood photos you'll ever have taken, your newborn session will be especially near and dear to your heart. The newborn stage is oh so special, a whirlwind of magic and love. It's also fleeting and goes by much quicker that you'll realize. While pregnant, you envision baby's face, imagine holding them in your arms, and cannot wait to meet little one! A new baby is the embodiment of a parent's hopes and dreams. This in mind, when selecting someone to document your sweet cherubs first photo shoot, it's important to ask these questions. A true professional will not mind taking the time to answer them, either.

There are two things, however, a parent should never compromise on: newborn safety and experience. Hiring a true professional is a decision you'll never regret making.

In the world of photography, there are many things you should take note of. Because babies can be hurt during a newborn session if an inexperienced photographer handles them incorrectly, you should always use a reputable, experienced, and professionally trained photographer. It's a smart idea to research them. Ask for an in person consultation. Come visit their studio. Look at their reviews. Ask friends about the experience if you know someone who used their services. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Moreover, does this person seem comfortable working with babies, is open and approachable, and someone you can see providing care for your little one in the 2-3 hours they're in studio?

Congratulations on your baby! You probably have your own list of questions, though here are some helpful ones to get you started as you look for the perfect fit for your family.

1 | Do You Specialize in newborn photography?

Specializing in posed newborn photography means you portrait artist has invested time, funds, and has experience in one specific niche within the photography market. They're the "go to" in the area for one genre. You set yourself apart by hyper focusing on one genre, being one of the top photographers in your area, and constantly looking to improve, thus offering an incredible experience and final product to your clients. You photograph what you love and do it well, all while being okay with giving up everything else. For example, I am exclusively photographing newborn babies these days.

I am truly excited about this and the opportunity to build and grow my newborn brand. When selecting a newborn photographer, it's important to choose someone who does specialize because you can be sure they take their job very seriously, are committed, and love the type of portraiture you've commissioned. It's perfectly okay to be a photographer who likes to photograph many genres! However, it's not specializing if you're taking 40 types of projects at once. In areas where it's a once in a lifetime session, such as newborn portraits or weddings, it is best to hire a professional who has a strong grasp on the content they're photographing. Clients deserve someone who is completely in love and enamored with the sessions they take on.

2) What precautions do you take to keep baby safe?

Newborn safety, handling and proper posing is absolutely of the utmost important during our time together! Your baby must be treated with love, care and respect. While they're very sweet and limber, many precautions must be taken to keep them safe. Keeping baby content is also important. A few ways I safe guard my sessions are the following:

  • My studio is kept at a toasty 77 degrees since baby will be naked for some of our session. They cannot regulate their body temperature as well as an adult so this keeps them warm.
  • The studio is sanitized and every item is cleaned between babies. This includes mopping with Lysol, wiping out the trashcan, spraying door handles with disinfectant, washing all linens and textiles in a baby friendly laundry soap, such as Dreft, and wiping out all props with a gentle soap so they're clean for the next little one who comes to studio.
  • Composites are always utilized for more advanced posing.
  • Bottoms of baskets and buckets are weighted down with 20 pounds of weight so baby never tips forward and is never in any risk of danger.
  • Keeping the studio space smoke free
  • Never leaving baby unattended or taking your eyes off of baby, even for a brief moment.
  • Being mindful to read baby's queues so as not to strain their muscles or joints.
  • Making sure to keep baby's autonomy in mind. If baby dislikes a pose, we move on. It is not fair to baby to force them into a position or prop if they're clearly uncomfortable.

3) What type of packages do you offer?

At Sarah Borchgrevink Photography, all of my newborn portrait packages are all inclusive. This means that one flat rate pays for time, talent, session design, retouching of your images, full access to my props and accessories, as well as the rendering of your full resolution digital gallery + a print release. All of my collections also include professional grade prints and products.

Moreover, if you're looking for beautiful heirloom prints and products, make sure you ask to stop by their studio and see samples. Many photographers offer wall art design, myself included, for parents with discerning eyes or who are interested in lovely quality. If this is not important to you, however, make sure you clarify with your photographer if they have a minimum print order and what their session fee includes. This helps you plan for your session and invest in what you love, whether it be products or digital files - perhaps even both :-) There is nothing wrong with either business model, but do not be shy to ask about either choice!

It's tempting to use a family friend or someone who does not specialize in newborn photography because their prices are so cheap, but these people are not running legal businesses nor are they trained in working with babies. My newborn photography is how I feed my family and I am a full time business owner. I take great pride and care in my work.

If the pricing is low, it's because they're not paying taxes and they're undercutting the market for those of us who follow the rules. They have not mentored, taken workshops, or know what they're doing. You absolutely get what you pay for and your newborn session will probably be a disappointment if you use someone who is not qualified to work with the most precious clients. I say this not out of malicious intent, but because many parents have told me they did not do enough research with their first baby and assumed all newborn photography is the same. It's not and your baby should be handled by someone who knows how to work with newborns, the same way your wedding should be photographed by someone who knows how to work with large events + couples.

4) Where are reviews located? Do you have a testimonial page?

I am happy to say I am the highest rated Houston Newborn Photographer. I have over 110 five star Google reviews because customer service and providing an impeccable service is absolutely a huge part of my business model. Each client is an individual to me whom I value. I also have a testimonial page clients are encouraged to peruse. I like to make reviews easily available to parents because it's a great option for you to see what other parents have to say. It also helps you see if we're a good fit for another. If a newborn photographer is shy about sharing kind words or reviews or perhaps has reviews in which parents express concerning details, please take that into consideration, particularly if it's about newborn safety and handling.

5) Can I see a full gallery of a session?

Absolutely! I have two full sample galleries for clients to view: one of which is a girl and the other a boy session. By looking at my portfolio via my website, you're able to see if you like the style of newborn photography I provide. For example, I specialize in posed baby portraits; I do not offer lifestyle or in home photography. If you're looking for an artist to come to your home, I would not be a good fit for you and that's perfectly okay. Parents deserve the session of their dreams! Now, if you want cozy wrapping and gorgeous, squishy newborn images than I'm the gal for you, ha!

It also lets you see my editing and retouching style, the types of props I have on hand, etc. You should select someone who's work makes your heart happy, someone whose images you can already envision on your wall. Check out lots of portfolios. Interview tons of photographers. You can only have one newborn session so it's important you pick someone who is right for your family.

6) Have you taken workshops or mentored under another professional?

Newborn workshops typically focus on things such as soothing babies, posing, handling, lighting, retouching, session flow, and how to read baby's queues. As an experienced newborn photographer, safety is my top priority. I have taken workshops and mentored, too. This is how I learned newborn photography. This is one of the most important elements to consider when you're hiring someone. Workshops ensure your baby is properly handled with love and care; they're posed the correct way; they're never placed in an unsafe or compromising position.

7) What kind of props do you offer?

All of my props are classic, rustic, organic, and vintage. I have a huge selection for you to consider. I have everything from baskets, bowls, buckets, crates, newborn beds, cradles, pails, etc. I also have every color of back drop, hat, bonnet, and a huge selection of gorgeous head bands. There is also a matching wrap for every color of backdrop I have, too.

8) Who is included in the newborn session?

Sometimes photographers do not include parents or siblings in their session. That's okay. It's their business. Make sure you ask about this, however, if you'd like parent posing or family images. These are very important to me, so I make sure I include these set ups. Some photographers also charge extra for these so it's best to clarify with your photographer beforehand so there is no confusion.

9) Are you fully vaccinated and insured?

A newborn photographer should absolutely NEVER work with infants if they're not vaccinated or insured. As a professional business, you must have business and liability insurance, as well as legal documents showing you're running a legitimate business. This means you are dealing with a true professional and not someone who is doing this as a side business, with zero to little training. Being vaccinated ensures baby is also in a safe environment. Since our little ones do not yet have a developed immune system, every precaution must be taken to keep them safe. Things like the flu are devastating to a newborn, similar to whooping cough.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I'd like to thank you for stopping by my blog to read about 9 great questions to get you started when interviewing a newborn artist. I hope you find these helpful and they get your brain moving on other aspects you'd like to know! Wishing you a fantastic week and amazing rest of your pregnancy!

Where to Find the Perfect Dress | Slay During Winter Family Photos

Houston Portrait Photographer, Sarah Borchgrevink, shares how to slay during your winter family photography session + where to find the best gowns!

Have no fear: styling is now here!

Good morning, gang! Thanks for visiting my blog to see where to find an awesome gown for a photo shoot! If this is your first time here, welcome! Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Sarah Borchgrevink (Bork-grey-veenk) and I'm married to the coolest dude on the planet, Kevin! Together we have three little girls (Lucy, Emma and Amelia) who we like to call the Tiny Tribe of Wild Women (yup, click that link to see our pregnancy announcement & gender reveal, ha).

However, just over a week ago we welcomed our son, Jack Alexander, into this world! This in mind, because I am a mommy and LOVE having photos done with my sweet little family, I do know what it's like to book the session and then say, "Okay. Yikes. What should I wear?"

I can attest that often, Moms put themselves last. It's part of the care giving nature. I find myself picking out my kiddos clothing first and then the hubby. Afterwards, I sit in my closet and think, "Does anything even look good on me?"

Stop. Right there. I, Sarah, totally give you permission to slay during those family photos! You are a awesome mommy + domestic goddess, HA! You deserve the coolest gowns that are soft, feminine, timeless and stunning. You are taking these photos not only for yourself, but for your little ones. This is also a fantastic way to connect with your spouse and significant other. Document the joy of your lives together. Give something tangible to represent all that is beautiful about your family. They're a wonderful way to preserve the love of your family and showcase darling milestones, such as an annual family photography session. Also, it's great for your little ones to see you feeling sassy, confident, and loving yourself.

Now: let's talk about winter. If you live in the south, like me, you know that the winter is the best time to take family photos because it's the only time of our calendar year it's not hot as heck, ha! Even the fall can still be in the 90's and as women of the south, we are just used to being warm. What to wear then?

TA-DA: Presenting the best dress!

  • This Olive Green Draped Gown with 3/4 Sleeves is the perfect dress for either a maternity session or family photos due to the adjustable waist. This dress, however, comes in a huge variety of colors such as black, burgundy, light blue, light pink, mauve, navy blue, olive, peach, periwinkle, pink, purple, and royal blue. So while I *did* select this as a winter choice, thanks to the sleeves, this could easily be used for any season.
  • This dress is the bomb dot com, too, because it's meant to transition into motherhood. You see, as mentioned above, I have four kids and quite frankly, it's nice there is gown that makes motherhood a little easier. You can wear this during pregnancy thanks to the polyester blend but also can use it afterwards as it is breathable.
the perfect dress for family photos

Here's what Mom had to say about this gown:

I loved the dress because it's a soft wrap dress that was very comfortable to wear. Being a new mom and need to be able to move without feeling constrained is a big selling point to me. I did not feel confined during the shoot and could enjoy my time with Sarah and my family. I chose the olive green color because I love earth tones like brown, cream, and greens. This made coordinating with my husband a breeze! I cannot recommend this dress enough!

5 Reasons to love this gown

  1. Perfect for date night, baby shower, maternity photos or family session.
  2. Flattering style with a solid pattern that is versatile
  3. Great dress for transitioning into motherhood as there is an adjustable waist (score!)
  4. Sash tie adds super cute detail but also allows you to cinch to fit as needed
  5. The draped v-neck is perfect for nursing moms too - we all need our life to be a little easier!

Pink Blush Boutique is a great vendor!

The artistic part of me, however, loves this vendor for several reasons. I adore sending clients here, so check out their site, Pink Blush Boutique

The selection is fantastic! For example, you'll find clothing for every occasion from spring, fall, summer, winter, and even holidays like Valentine's Day or your special celebration, like a baby shower. Better yet: they also offer a selection of accessories sure to complete your outfit such a shoes, jewelry, hats, bags, scarves, etc. They all coordinate together perfectly and it just makes things easier.

Moreover, they several sizes from size 2 to 3x. This is great they cater to many sizes and shapes! As we all know, everyone is different. They also have free shipping on all U.S. orders + a coupon for 10 percent off your first purchase! Wow!

Allow me to introduce this stunning client

The D family is a baby plan membership client of mine. We also did a gorgeous maternity session, too, so check out more of their beautiful natural light, sunset pregnancy portraits. Mom is especially a sweet client because she inquired before she was even pregnant! One day, I was working at my desk, and she asks all about my packages, explaining they are going to try for a baby soon.

A few months later, she contacted me to let me know baby is cooking! We scheduled a maternity session (linked above) and then also a baby plan membership, which means they reserved the first year of life + family photos for their sweet baby! It includes a full newborn collection, 6 month sitter + family session, and also a 12 month cake smash + family photos.

Because of this, it's truly been a joy to meet their family and work together. Here are a few super cute shots of their darling baby girl. Here she is at just a few days old.

A Mother’s Love | Favorite Ways to Pose Mom and Newborn Baby

Sarah Borchgrevink Photography, located in Houston, previews the most stunning and sweet mothers who have visited the studio recently! Read about Sarah's favorite ways to pose new mothers and their precious earth side babies.

There is no greater love than a mother has for her child

Howdy, friend! I am super excited to see you're visiting my little 'ol blog! Today's post chats about my favorite ways to pose newborn babies and their mothers as well as why parent posing is included in all three custom, curated collections I offer to fresh new babies in Houston TX. Please allow me to introduce myself! My name is Sarah Borchgrevink. Yes, yes - I know my last name is a mouthful but the fellow I am married to is such a sensational lad I had to take that last name, ha! We've been married since we were 19 years old and 8 years later we have four little ones! Motherhood influences my portraiture work because it allows me to relate to my clients on a personal level.

Because I am a mommy myself, I truly believe parent posing is of the utmost importance and it's included in all three collections I offer. If you'd like to take a quick peek at them, check ' em out. :-) There is a mini, petite or full session; these typically takes place at 5-8 days new, though I will take newborns up to 14 days if needed.

There is no greater love than a mother has for her children. I often am reminded that the depths and multifaceted dimensions to our relationships with our children deserve to be preserved and honored. This in mind, I enjoy working with parents during our newborn session together. As a perk, I do include parent/family set ups in all of my sessions and I do hope you take advantage of this.

I include parent posing in all of my sessions because this time is incredibly special and fleeting; parents have no idea how quickly time passes until they bring their new baby home from the hospital or birthing center. All of the sudden, your baby is months old or even a year! The first year of life, for instance, is a whirlwind of adjustments and milestones in which we are constantly looking forward and not always in the moment. By including parent and family posing, such as mom and baby, in my collections you will fondly look back on these images and be filled with love for your sweet newborn cherub. I know many new parents do not feel camera ready, however, you'll be super happy to have taken these.

BACK LIT MOTHER AND NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY

Creating soulful, dynamic and stunning portraiture is one of my favorite parts of being a Houston Newborn Photographer. In my studio, you'll find the most gorgeous ethereal lighting and this is truly a cornerstone to my baby sessions. I simply adore the way the light fills the room, illuminating the subjects, thus adding a sense of peace, serenity and joy to the final product.

I always include back-lit images in all of my sessions and galleries. While I do have an impressive wooden wall, this gives two looks, so diversity is a wonderful element, too.  When implementing back-lit images into your session, the process is simple: back-lit simply means Mom stands paralell to the light and is lit from behind. I like baby to be facing her at all times so we're able to see a beautiful profile of darling little one's features.

The Criss-Cross Pose of Mom and Baby

I love posing a mother and her newborn baby in the "criss-cross" pose, which is essentially a pattern of intersection straight lines or paths, meaning the arms of mom are crossed over her shoulders with baby sweetly nestled into her palms. This can be done in many different ways. Each baby is different; some are longer, shorter, chubbier, more petite, or curly. However, they're wrapped for each and every parent shot, as wrapping is a huge cornerstone to how I create unique and timeless newborn portraiture.

Cypress TX Newborn Photographer

When doing this pose, you can always have mom back-lit, explained above, or you can use a simple background. I usually use my wooden wall in studio since it contrasts with parents. If you're unsure about to what to wear to your session, have no fear. Each parent is given a detailed newborn prep guide on what to expect and clothing suggestions are given.

The Shoulder

The third pose I typically implement is baby gently placed against Mom's shoulder. I like this pose because you're able to see Mom's face and all of baby's gorgeous little features such as their sweet little newborn toes, button nose, hands gently folded beneath their chin, and of course their faces!

This pose is simple to achieve and never causes me stress or worry. I am able to do it quickly, too, and make mom feel comfortable because she is not awkwardly holding baby for a long period of time while we adjust things. I personally like wrapped parent and baby images, so this helps me do a session much faster. By wrapping baby, baby is the perfect little package and easier for parents to hold, I can leave their diapers on and it makes for much less clean up and messes, and also makes baby happy. Babies adore being wrapped - I cannot stress this enough.

As always, I would love to thank you for visiting my blog! I enjoy writing about new topics and creative projects I'm working on. Check back in a few days to see new posts! Looking forward to your visit. :-)
