Lucy is five months old. Wait, what? Didn't I just bring her home from the hospital? Wasn't I just placing in her crib, singing to her, welcoming her to our home? Was I not, just moments ago, introducing Lucy to Emma; full of pride as Emma stepped into her role as big sister?
And yet, it's been five months.
In parenting, you quickly realize you've taken on a monumental responsibility: raising a child. You strive to do everything correct; to judge which advice to absorb (or ignore), to embrace the "correct" parenting style, to feed your little darling the perfect ratio of nutrient dense food. You use the proper laundry detergent and read car seat safety reports; you detect allergies, suddenly drive much safer, and sometimes you worry you're doing it all wrong.
Well, maybe it is different for everyone, but that's how it is for me. All these things can sometimes make the days feel a little long - not terribly long, just filled with a grand amount of responsibility. But stepping back, taking in the months, you see how short the time is.
It's already been five months. I'll be blinking and she'll head off to college! Because of this, my project for 2015 (yes, photographers have a zillion projects going on at once) is to photograph my littles weekly, and then, at the end of the year, have a coffee table book made of the images.
I am starting a little early, as there is no time like the present.
Little Lucy - you are full of spunk and fire and hope and beauty and constant surprises. You are loved. You are treasured. You fill us with wonder. You are already full of quirks; for instance, instead of crying...you bellow. Yes, she bellows! From her excersaucer throne, she summons us, Mom and Dad, even big sister, to her beck and call. She waves her fist like a mighty dictator, calling for a bottle of warm milk. The hubster and I secretly find this amusing; our child, the bellower. We joke that she has trained us well. Parenting makes you find humor in the most odd places.
Oh, Lucy. You babble in your crib, you roll, your find your toes, and with extreme flexibility you enjoy placing those toes in your mouth. You smack your lips, you flutter your eyelashes, you pull my hair if it grazes across your reach. Yes, my little ginger love, you are already keeping us on our toes. You splash in the tub, you shake your rattle. Such small acts of childhood bring smiles to me; you and your sister, Emma, have turned me into a softie - one who treasures and finds nuance in every delicate (or not-so-delicate bellow) moment.
We are so happy, so blessed, to call you ours.
