Creating Dynamic and Gorgeous Family Portraits

Howdy, friends! Greetings to you! Today's blog post takes a look into the mind of a photographer. If this is your fist time at my blog, please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Sarah and I'm located in Houston, TX. I've been a full time photographer since 2013. While every portrait artist has their own methods, these are some tips in how I select locations for your family or maternity portrait sessions. Locations are influenced by many factors, all of which are listed below. I hope you find this post informative and it inspires you to chase the light and embrace modern storytelling.

Choosing the perfect family photo location

Think about the story you'd like to tell

Portrait photography is modern storytelling, crafted with love. Through the use of dynamic and soulful lighting, connected posing, atmosphere, and adorable outfits, you're able to embrace the spirit of the family and show them for who they are. Of course, family, child or maternity sessions will need some direction, so keeping this in mind is how you create images that will be treasured forever.

Your location should reflect the type of story you'd like to tell. For instance, when choosing this location I wanted to showcase a beautiful family who are celebrating their darling baby girl's first year of life. They're young, hip, carefree, and having a wonderful parenthood journey. This in mind, I like to use Hermann Park, in Houston, for sunrise family sessions. You do have to move quickly since the light is fleeting, but oh the light is so delicious and swoon worthy! Hermann Park is also one of Houston's most visited public parks as it's centrally located between Fannin Street and Cambridge Street, right in the heart of the medical district. There are over 5.5 million visits per year and 445 acres since its creation in 1914 (source). This alone should tell you many people marvel at its natural beauty, central location, and large area you may utilize.

Flexibility

You should ask yourself, "Is this location flexible? Will this look nice for all of the set ups needed for a family session?" You see, when photographing families, especially those with young children, the session may not be traditional in the sense where everyone is sitting nicely, smiling at the camera. Gone are the days of stiff portraits. Instead, many photographers, including myself, enjoy encouraging families to interact with one another. I want you to be who you are: connect with your spouse, play with your children, showcase the familiar bonds and connections. Years from now you will reflect on these images and see they are connection to who you are, what you've built, and when your children young. I promise you that will you miss them being small, and I absolutely adore all the photos of my own three little ones. Another aspect of flexibility you may want to consider is if the location is centrally located. In a city that's geographically large, it's nice to have options for parents who live inside the 610 loop.

Does it require a permit?

In the city of Houston, a professional photography permit is often required for nearly all parks and many gardens. According to the Hermann Park Conservancy, their photography policy is:

Any commercial use of any city property requires a permit. A professional photographer must obtain a permit for a photography session in Hermann Park by calling the City of Houston at 832-394-8805. Professional photography is not permitted in the Japanese Garden.

Before shooting at any location, I do make sure I am covered legally. I would never want to be removed from a location, so if you're a professional photographer in Houston, think of permits like this: you would hope your own clients will respect your contract and as professionals, we should all respect the contracts of city parks. I say this as a friendly reminder. It would also be really embarrassing to be "kicked out" of a location in the middle of a session. Always act with caution and perceive risk: if a permit is required, you can go through the proper channels and you'll be glad you did so.

Keep the season in mind

As mentioned in an earlier post this month, in Houston we essentially have two seasons: hot and hotter. However, there is a brief time in October - December where we have these gorgeous mornings in which the weather is in the high 70's. Part of why I love to photograph young families and children during the gorgeous sunrise lighting is because the weather is better. Your location should keep the season in mind by ensuring all outfit styles look nice in the settings.

Dynamic and soulful lighting

The heart of my family portraiture work is providing dynamic and soulful lighting during my sessions. I exclusively shoot during golden hour, which is sunrise and sunset. It's a very short window of time in which the light is soft, golden, and is either coming up over the horizon or setting beneath the trees, depending on if you're photographing a client during sunrise or sunset. This is how you take your images to the next level: while some photographers may say you can achieve this look in Photoshop, I believe your photos should look fantastic straight out of camera. You want to do minimal work and processing on the final images.

Well, folks! That's it for now. Be sure to check back soon for more photography tips I'd love to share with you. These simple yet effective tips will help you find locations that showcase your brand and shooting style.

What Props are provided:

When booking a child or baby session with Sarah Borchgrevink Photography, Sarah provides time, talent, and items that are already in my studio such as rustic crates, quilts, buckets, bowls, tie backs or headbands. In cases in which you're looking for a specific theme, parents bring these items. In this case, Mom brought items from baby girl's nursery, the outfits, and the cake. That way, there are no allergic reactions. I am happy to recommend some really awesome Houston bakers for you, such as El Bolillo, located in central Houston. Parents also bring any balloons they'd like, too.

I provided the head bands, seen below, and also the rustic barrel. My specialty is posed newborn photography, so the props I typically pull are items that I use with newborns, such as antique an vintage inspired pieces. High chairs, buckets, pails, boxes, crates, etc. Take a look at my studio to see the type of items I have on hand, such as bonnets and adorable head bands you may use, too.

Please note I do take limited cake smash sessions as my focus is posed newborns; if you are interested in a first birthday session, please considering inquiring in advance so you're able to secure a spot on my calendar.

This sweet toddler baby girl had such an infectious personality. Despite being in the car for over an hour, she was in fantastic spirits, so full of smiles and personality. When culling her images, I had a huge smile on my face because she simply was such a lovely baby girl.

What To Wear For Fall Family Photos When It's Hot in the South

You've scheduled your outdoor fall family session but it's in the 90's. Now what?

Fall Inspired Family Photo Clothing: How to Look Festive in the Heat

Hi there! Today's blog post focuses on your Houston Family Photography session and some ideas for fall inspired outfits that beat the heat. If you're from the south, particularly Texas, you may have realized we have two seasons here: hot and hotter. Sometimes we get three seasons aka hot and humid and muggy, lol! I have lived here for almost my entire life and I can attest I've worn shorts and flip flops on Christmas. It's just the way it is. However, you may have also noticed those adorable fall pinterest photos that we all long for. You know, the ones that take place in the Northeastern part of the country that are filled with fall colors, layers, textures, and dare I say snow.

As a mother, for me, the most stressful part of the entire photo process is finding outfits. Even as a professional photographer, I struggle with this, too, because you simply want to look nice, but not overly dressed, particularly if you're doing a rural photo location. Once you've found the perfect photographer, location, and scheduled your date, that's where the "now what?" begins.

Have no fear: while we're not going to have snow during your fall family session, I am here to guide you and help you select outfits that have a fall twist but aren't going to have you sweating buckets. After all, we are southern belles and certainly don't want to glisten too much during our sessions!

Light Layers With Autumnal Tones

Fall Pictures Ideas for Toddlers

One of my favorite outdoor fall color schemes is maroon, brown, cream or navy. These are fantastic because they look classic and timeless. They also allows for light layers so that you're sure to appear like a fall fashionista without too warm. We also know toddlers are in better spirits when they're comfortable, so a light jacket, scarf, or even leg warmers are an adorable way to show texture and layers without melting.

Choose two favorite colors and highlight those

Your accent color can vary from session to session, however, this is typically the brightest color. In this case, the deep maroon (or cranberry if you will) is the main tone in these outfits. As you can see, Dad's checkered shirt, Mom's skirt, little one's bow and tights are all similar in color. This provides cohesion without being too "matchy matchy". Gone are the days where everyone dresses in the same outfit. After all, if everyone wore khaki pants and a red polo, it would like like a Target ad. This is not to say I don't enjoy long walks down every aisle of Target, but for family photos you want everyone to have the main color in their outfit but it be sparingly. This is why little one has the bow in her hair, dad the stripe in his shirt, and Mom the skirt. Coheisve yet not blinding.

Your Accessories Help Suggest Season

family outdoor photography houston

When selecting accessories, keep the season in mind. These images are most probably going to be hung on your walls; they'll be treasured heirlooms passed down from generation to generation. I know, I know: you may not be thinking of your great grandchildren right now, your child is a toddler, but I promise you: these things matter! Your clothing represents who you are. For outdoor family photography in Houston, a stylish pair of boots are a great option! Cowboy boots look dapper on dad, too, if these are a representation of his style. Little ones look adorable in ankle boots, perhaps even with a little burlap or lace bow. You know we love burlap in the south, ha! Seriously: it's adorable, just like mason jars and reclaimed wood. I know: talk Joann and Chip to me and we'll be best friends. What can I say? Ha! Light scarves are nice, too, because they add the accent pop of color I mentioned earlier but do not cause you to have a heat stroke. If you have a little boy, maybe consider a bow tie or even a pair of suspenders! So dapper, timeless, classic, and just fantastic! Truly lovely!
