How to Use Newborn Wrapping to Transition to Bean Bag Posing

Creating classic, fresh and natural newborn posing by beginning with a simple, timeless style of newborn wrapping. Houston baby photographer, Sarah Borchgrevink, shares tips on newborn styling.

Fresh, clean, timeless, beautiful.

Today's blog post is step-by-step portraits showing how to transition into bean bag posing from a simple style of newborn wrapping. Sometimes when working with a new baby, they prefer to be wrapped and dislike the feeling of being naked. However, an important trick and tip is to keep your studio nice and warm when the baby is present. Not only does this create a soothing, womblike environment, it helps baby relax so they're more likely to be moldable and curly for those oh-so-precious naked bean bag images!

Let's get started!

Babies typically prefer the texture of soft textiles, such as jersey knit.

At this point in your session, this is a fantastic time to show how a baby may have slept in the womb. See how their little feet are curled up and they are nestled so sweetly? To have the best newborn photography in your area, it's important to create timeless, beautiful and fresh portraits parents are sure to swoon over!

Feel free to get creative: place baby's hands perfectly on their feet, chest, or even their cheek and face. This makes for a darling newborn portrait!

Now that baby boy is on his side and dreaming of all things milk and mommy (ha! this is what I imagine at least), you can begin transitioning him into natural newborn poses without awaking his slumber.

At this point, you can begin gently guiding and posing baby into the desired poses, such as slide sleeper or taco pose. These often mimic the womb and show the brand new, curly nature of a recent earthside baby.  These poses are truly beautiful and while they look simple, require much training to achieve the effortless look of a sleeping baby.

However, wrapping a baby prior to bean bag posing is an awesome way to create these dreamy, timeless photos! Parents deserve the best newborn photography available to them and I proudly present galleries with much joy because it's an honor to photograph cherubs in their newborn stage.

And there you have it! One simple way to wrap baby whilst keeping them asleep and cozy!

Aquamarine, Teal and Turquoise | March Birthstone Accenting Spring

Aquamarine is the perfect accent color for spring. Featuring rich colors and symbolizing youth, health and hope this stone makes for a beautiful inspiration color palette!

Using Sea Green, Turquoise, Teal, and Aqua in a Newborn Boy Session

It is no secret that I am a lover of all things blue, green and vibrant! This in mind, for the month of March I am very excited to present newborn sessions featuring aquamarine, which is the birthstone for this month. The rich color is a symbol of youth, health, and hope which pairs perfectly with bringing home a new baby. Reflecting spring and new life, this stunning accent color is an amazing option for a newborn session.

The birthstone has a fantastic sea-green hue which also looks fantastic with gold and silver materials. For example, the newborn boy I am showcasing today has a nursery with all things teal, turquoise, sea foam, and also copper and gun metals, too! Your newborn session is absolutely a great way to reflect the colors you like to have in your home.

Moreover, aquamarine is known for its calming and soothing aura, so this is a great accompaniment to a newborn session in which we like to replicate a quiet environment when working with a baby.

Sloane’s Spring Inspired Sitter Session | Houston Baby Portraits

Sneak preview of Sloane's Spring Inspired Sitter Milestone Session by Sarah Borchgrevink Photography.

Howdy, friends! Welcome to my blog! As I write this post, I cannot help but be super excited to showcase a sweet baby girl named Sloane! I first met her at her posed newborn session in August. It's been about 6 months and now she's a precious infant who is sitting up, clapping her hands, rolling over, and hitting all of those adorable baby milestones parents love to see!

Fun fact: Sloane's mama told me that her name means "female Irish warrior" which I truly believe is fitting for a modern gal! I really love when parents share details about the names of little ones and why they chose the name.

Another fun part of Sloane's newborn session was the color scheme; we used many hues from rust, green, purple, and many antique, vintage buckets such as an aged metal pail you'll find in my studio. Color can make a session truly unique and special; while neutrals are the current trend, the color is what makes babies have that creamy, gorgeous skin in the images.

Before we get started, here are a few images to swoon over that took place during the newborn portion of my time with baby girl.

So much sweet bean bag posing here! As a professional photographer, I do specialize in posed newborn photography and enjoy working with the smallest of clients. This rust-red color is absolutely amazing against her skin and really makes the gallery special.

As a newborn, she was a complete squish with gorgeous features and a precious head full of golden locks. Her parents were a dream to have in studio + big brother was the best!

Inspiration for Sloane's Sitter Session: Spring and Green

When newborn returns for their sitter session (and eventually their 12-month session!) each session is designed with the newborn photos in mind. For example, I use the floor props from their newborn session to show how much baby has grown. In this case, the rustic and antique bucket is the perfect vehicle to showcase little Sloane and all her cuteness.

The night before Sloane was scheduled to come in, I created a set up for her based on beautiful Spring green and hues; I also ordered a new succulent headband for her to match the floral tone. This is the same bucket from her newborn session and I'll definitely use it again for the 12-month cake smash!

Booking a session at Sarah Borchgrevink Photography means you'll have full access to a large array of amazing props, all of which are classic, vintage, and result in timeless baby photography.

This headband is so dainty and perfect for a baby girl! I love how soft & simple it is so as not to detract from little one.
